Scanning the brain for PTSD

A study published this week reports that a machine known as magnetoencephalography can correctly identify PTSD 90% of the time.  Researchers at the VA in Minneapolis, Minnesota used technology that has been studied for years: imaging the activity of the brain using magnetic sensors.  Wikipedia has a nice article about the technique, but it should be noted that the Wikipedia article about Magneto the comic book character is probably longer.»

LabCorp suspends OvaSure testing for ovarian cancer screening

In a surprising brief notice to clients LabCorp has suspended the OvaSure test as of October 24 2008.  I received a fax in my office today October 23 noting the change; Dr. Marcia Eisenberg was cited as a corporate contact for questions at 800-533-0567 x 7760.

LabCorp reps are visiting offices to hawk OvaSure a new ovarian cancer screening test. The need for an ovarian cancer screening test is huge. Ovarian cancer is a tremendous problem because although it affects relatively low numbers of women each year it often presents at an advanced incurable stage. A screening test for ovarian cancer therefore is welcome and overdue. I have not personally been impressed by the performance of CA-125 as a screening test and pelvic ultrasound is invasive and not very effective either. Enter OvaSure.
